You see it a lot in current interior design trends; the Kokodama. A handmade sphere made of natural coconut fibres, containing a beautiful plant. Hanging, lying or standing, the Kokodama creates a cosy and sustainable home for different types of plants.

The creators of the Kokodama, Monique Ouwerling and René van Kester, are fans of coconut. Monique Ouwerling of Kokodama: ‘The coconut is at the heart of everything we do. WE LIVE & LOVE KOKO! The coconut has an undeniable primal power. In fact, the coconut palm is one of the oldest trees on earth, and is also called the ‘Tree of Life’. For centuries, it has provided humans with important necessities of life. Food, drink, oil, shelter, clothing and wood; you can do anything with coconut. The coconut has KOKOPOWER!’

Highly sustainable product

Kokodama proudly presents its revamped, handmade coconut fibre sphere. Completely without plastic! 99% natural and 100% biodegradable. Monique: ‘With the Kokodama 2.0 we have put something special on the market. The concept contains no plastic and is 100% biodegradable. As nature lovers, we like to offer an alternative to the usual plastic pot, so that plant and pot together form a harmonious, organic whole. In doing so, we also considered ease of use.’

Socially committed

Craftsmanship and corporate responsibility are paramount. The Kokodama is handmade in Sri Lanka, where the sale of the Kokodamas supports the local economy. With every Kokodama sold, part of the proceeds go back to Sri Lanka where it is spent on children's education.

Working method

During our visit, co-owner Leon Prins shows us the production process. The coconut balls are delivered ready-made from Sri Lanka. These bulbs are filled with beautiful plants. Leon buys these plants directly from growers. The plants that find their home in the Kokodama are carefully selected by Leon. ‘Planthunting is in our nature. We are therefore constantly on the lookout for unusual plants, applications, and shapes.’ After the plant is placed in the bulb, it is labelled, placed in the cardboard tray and is ready to leave for the customer.

Kokopot

In 2023, Kokodama introduced the Kokopot. This product does not hang, but stands. And is reminiscent of a real flower pot, but made of coconut fibre. The pot is 99% waterproof and still fully biodegradable. Kokoplant thus offers a unique, sustainable and natural alternative to the standard, plastic plant pot.
