The wax amaryllis is an amaryllis bulb that has been dipped in candle wax and often also decorated with glitter, patterns or paint. This ‘dry bloomer’ does not need any water. That is because the wax acts as a protective layer for the bulb, ensuring that no moisture escapes through the sides of the bulb and the bulb is not damaged.

Wax amaryllis bulbs often come from South America, from Brazil or Peru. The climate here is warmer. The bulbs have already had 6 to 8 weeks of warmth so that they bloom as soon as you bring them home.

A stately hollow stem emerges from a bulb, on which smooth buds then develop. These open into voluminous calyxes with velvety petals in white, salmon, red, pink or even green. The flowers can reach a diameter of 20 cm. From the time when the stem emerges to full flowering is approximately 6 to 8 weeks. During this period it is important to give the pot a quarter turn every few days to prevent the stem from growing towards the sun and therefore ending up crooked. An amaryllis flowers for 3 to 6 weeks. The flowers bloom, and when they are exhausted a new stem may even appear that ultimately delivers even more flowers.
