Jaap Freke

Jaap Freke is the longest-serving employee at Heemskerk Flowers. Since joining in 1974, he has witnessed the company’s remarkable growth firsthand. From a small workspace to a vast location at Royal FloraHolland, and from manual labor to digital processes—Jaap has seen it all. As the dedicated buyer of gerberas and germinis, he was known for his incredible speed and commitment. Now retired, he still drives between the auctions two mornings a week. A true colleague with a passion for the business!

From dried flowers to Heemskerk Flowers

Before joining Heemskerk Flowers, Jaap worked for seven years with dried flowers at another company. At the age of 19, he transitioned to Heemskerk Flowers, starting in a small 12 by 25-meter workspace with a cooling unit and a tiny office. His first role involved selling various products to customers. Statice, in particular, sold exceptionally well – entire airplane pallets were delivered. Communication was much more challenging back then, and Jaap spent his entire day walking back and forth to keep track of everything.

From sales to purchasing

Jaap’s dedication led to an increase in customers, which in turn made purchasing busier. He began assisting with procurement and eventually specialized in buying gerberas, spray carnations, standard carnations, and cymbidiums. He ultimately became a full-time buyer, a role he held for 36 years, primarily focusing on gerberas and germinis.

During this time, the flower industry underwent significant changes, especially with digitalization. Laptops were introduced to the purchasing area, along with mobile phones. Working with a laptop wasn’t second nature to Jaap, but with help from younger colleagues, he quickly adapted to modern methods.

Flexible and versatile

After 36 years as a buyer, Jaap transitioned to the packing department. This wasn’t entirely new to him, as he had already been involved in packing alongside his purchasing duties. He also spent a year driving a van to deliver flowers to retailers, mainly in Belgium. Even later in his career, Jaap remained flexible and willing to take on various roles within the company.

A lifetime at Heemskerk Flowers

Over the years, Jaap saw many colleagues come and go. His 25th and 40th anniversaries were celebrated with receptions where he was thanked for his dedication and hard work. His passion for the flower trade is undeniable, as even in retirement, he continues working for Heemskerk Flowers. Twice a week, he still drives between auctions, transporting products.

Jaap Freke is a true example of dedication, flexibility, and love for the profession. His contributions to Heemskerk Flowers are invaluable, and his passion for flowers continues to shine in everything he does.
