Read more about this versatile colleague!

The start

Leo started at A. Heemskerk BV as a buyer on 1 January 1988. Prior to that, he had spent 13 years driving a mobile wholesale flower truck in the Netherlands. Despite the fact that Leo had no buying experience, they were confident that it would be fine. And it certainly was!

Passion for buying

At that time buying unusual flowers was becoming increasingly important. There was a lot of demand for new, distinctive and extra-large flowers. This is where Leo’s passion started.

A lot was still done by hand in those days. Hence orders received by fax were copied by hand, and the totals were hand-counted. This meant that Leo had to work from 3 a.m. to 5 p.m., and sometimes as late as 8 p.m. on Friday.

Staff association

At that time Leo also set up the staff association with a number of colleagues. This resulted in bingo sessions and a St Nicolas party for the employees’ children. He was also in charge of the staff parties in those days.

Quality controller

in the plants department
Leo has been a quality controller in the plants department for a number of years. He make sure that the plants that are in stock are and remain optimum quality. With the passion that he has always had for his work, we can be fairly sure that Leo will be with Heemskerk Flowers until he retires. What happens after that is still entirely undecided as far as Leo is concerned.

Dealing room

In 2002 Leo moved to another company. But after 2.5 years Bert Heemskerk Senior asked him to come back, and he did. He returned to his ‘old job’. Technology was constantly developing. First the handwritten buying lists were replaced with a computer, and later a dealing room was created in our own new building, which made the buying more organised and easier.
