Richard van der Meij has been working at Heemskerk Flowers for 20 years. Right from the start he is responsible for distributing inbound goods. You can therefore often see him driving through the building with a train of carts behind him. We talked to him about his work, and what makes it so much fun that he’s stuck with it for all this time.

What does a normal working day looked like for you?

I start by collecting the inbound goods. Suppliers and growers deliver the goods that we have ordered to FloraHolland in Rijnburg. We also purchase at the various FloraHolland locations. All this come together at our hall at FloraHolland Rijnburg. That’s virtually opposite our company. We collect the carts and bring them to our department, where we scan the products. During scanning it becomes clear whether they include orders for customers or mobile wholesalers. These orders are distributed to the right location. The products intended for our own stock are taken to our photography section, where the products are photographed straightaway and placed in stock. As soon as all the inbound goods have been distributed, I move on to looking for missing products for our mobile wholesalers. The mobile wholesalers tell me if they haven’t received something, and I then ensure that they get the products. If a product is not available, I will find a replacement product for them.

How do you distribute the product?

The distribution partly uses the conveyor belt. We give the packages or boxes a code which shows where the products need to go. This ensures that the products automatically end up with the right customers. I drive large consignments, such as entire carts, to the location myself. These are usually the goods intended for our own stock.

What do you most enjoy about your work?

I find it fun to try and get the goods to the locations as quickly and accurately as possible. On extremely busy days, such as British Mother’s Day, I’m totally in my element. It’s a real challenge to distribute the products quickly at times like that. Secretly I rather enjoy it if the photography section then ‘drown’ in the many goods that we have delivered to them.
